At its peak strength, the USAAF had as many as 450,000 personnel in Britain. Half of them were stationed across East Anglia’s 70+ airbases: With approximately 3000 personnel at each location.
At the height of operations the United States Army Air Force were building a new airbase in the region at a rate of one per week, and at a cost of over $1,000,000 each.
By 1942, American culture had arrived in Britain and quickly began to shape the social landscape. Music and food were just two aspects that drastically changed with the arrival of the USAAF.
The ‘Friendly Invasion’ has left a lasting impact on East Anglia; some of its airfields still remain (a handful of which provided perfect filming locations for Magpie) and the memory of the Americans’ time here lives on…
